2: Utopia and Dystopia
Utopia— An ideally perfect place, especially in
its social, political, and moral aspects. (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/utopia)
Dystopia— An imaginary place or state in which
the condition of life is extremely bad, as from deprivation, oppression, or
terror. (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/dystopia)
When
I think of utopia I imagine a place that is nothing like the world that we live
in today. I picture a place where everything is perfect. An ideal perfect place
would be a place with no poverty, crime, diseases, or warfare. Heaven is a good
example of utopia. Everyone imagines heaven as this wonderful place where there
is no wrong and everything is perfect. The idea of a utopia only exists in our
minds and fictional movies or books. Realistically, it is impossible to have a place
that is perfect in its social, political, and moral aspects.
As
opposed to a utopia, a dystopia is when the state of living is bad. When I think
of a dystopia I think of a place with people suffering and horrible living
conditions. Recently I saw the movie Hunger Games. This movie is the perfect
example of a dystopia. In the film two kids from each 12 districts are chosen
by the capitol to fight for their lives. All 12 districts are able to watch
them on television. The kids that are chosen have no choice but to participate
in what they call the Hunger Games. Another case of a dystopia is seen in totalitarian
governments and dictatorships. In both of these types of governments, there is
only one ruler or political party and the people of its country are forced to
do what they are told. The people who live under these circumstances live in
fear of their government and sometimes are unable to leave their country.
A utopia
and dystopia are completely opposite states. My understanding of a utopia is a perfect place or state
meanwhile a dystopia is a horrible state of living.
