Blog 2: Utopia and Dystopia

Blog 2: Utopia and Dystopia

Utopia An ideally perfect place, especially in its social, political, and moral aspects. (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/utopia)

Dystopia— An imaginary place or state in which the condition of life is extremely bad, as from deprivation, oppression, or terror. (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/dystopia)

When I think of utopia I imagine a place that is nothing like the world that we live in today. I picture a place where everything is perfect. An ideal perfect place would be a place with no poverty, crime, diseases, or warfare. Heaven is a good example of utopia. Everyone imagines heaven as this wonderful place where there is no wrong and everything is perfect. The idea of a utopia only exists in our minds and fictional movies or books. Realistically, it is impossible to have a place that is perfect in its social, political, and moral aspects.

As opposed to a utopia, a dystopia is when the state of living is bad. When I think of a dystopia I think of a place with people suffering and horrible living conditions. Recently I saw the movie Hunger Games. This movie is the perfect example of a dystopia. In the film two kids from each 12 districts are chosen by the capitol to fight for their lives. All 12 districts are able to watch them on television. The kids that are chosen have no choice but to participate in what they call the Hunger Games. Another case of a dystopia is seen in totalitarian governments and dictatorships. In both of these types of governments, there is only one ruler or political party and the people of its country are forced to do what they are told. The people who live under these circumstances live in fear of their government and sometimes are unable to leave their country.

A utopia and dystopia are completely opposite states. My understanding of a utopia is a perfect place or state meanwhile a dystopia is a horrible state of living.

    Dear Katia,
I read your paper and I found it interesting. Your introduction caught my attention because you started talking about dystopia and compared it to the world we living in right now. You also spoke about utopia and how it’s a perfect place to live in. It’s good that you put in the movie “Gattaca” and who it was directed by “ Andrew Niccol” you should put the director in parenthesis and also the movie. Your thesis is well placed caught my interest. Your summary was good. You used your quotes well. You should always use quotes so people could know it didn’t come from you that it came from the author or whoever. Your paragraphs were well structured. It was good that you summed up your topic sentence at the end of the paragraph. Your development was good. It was good that you put in your own ideas in so they could understand the comparison you made to the dystopia world.
